Letters Mingle Souls, 1974

These 1974 stamps are printed in a se-tenant (multiple designs on one sheet) of eight stamps, each depicting an old painting related to letter writing. They are varied and capture a variety of styles, from Japan to France to the US, but show a universal concept, which is communication through words on paper. Each painting says a lot about the culture it comes from and is worth close inspection. They are beautiful!

These stamps celebrate 100 years of the Universal Postal Union, the international mail governing body. The phrase “Letters Mingle Souls” appears on four of the eight stamps. It is a reference to a John Donne poem you can read here:

To Sir Henry Wotton

John Donne - 1571-1631

Sir, more than kisses, letters mingle souls,
For thus, friends absent speak. This ease controls
The tediousness of my life; but for these
I could ideate nothing which could please,
But I should wither in one day and pass
To a bottle of hay, that am a lock of grass.
Life is a voyage, and in our lives' ways
Countries, courts, towns are rocks, or remoras;
They break or stop all ships, yet our state's such,
That, though than pitch they stain worse, we must touch.
If in the furnace of the raging Line,
Or under th' adverse icy Pole thou pine,
Thou know'st two temperate regions, girded in,
Dwell there; but oh! what refuge canst thou win
Parched in the court and in the country frozen?
Shall cities built of both extremes be chosen?
Can dung or garlic be perfume? Or can
A scorpion or torpedo cure a man?
Cities are worst of all three; of all three
(Oh knotty riddle) each is worst equally.
Cities are sepulchres; they who dwell there
Are carcasses, as if no such they were;
And courts are theatres, where some men play
Princes, some slaves, all to one end, of one clay.
The country is a desert, where no good
Gained as habits, not born, is understood;
There men become beasts and prone to all evils;
In cities, blocks; and in a lewd court, devils.
As in the first Chaos confusedly,
Each element's qualities were in the other three,
So pride, lust, covetise, being several
To these three places, yet all are in all,
And mingled thus, their issue is incestuous:
Falsehood is denizen'd; Virtue is barbarous.
Let no man say there, "Virtue's flinty wall
Shall lock vice in me; I'll do none, but know all."
Men are sponges, which, to pour out, receive;
Who know false play, rather than lose, deceive.
For in best understandings sin began;
Angels sinned first, then devils, and then man.
Only perchance beasts sin not; wretched we
Are beasts in all but white integrity.
I think if men, which in these places live,
Durst look in themselves, and themselves retrieve,
They would like strangers greet themselves, seeing then
Utopian youth grown old Italian.
   Be then thine own home, and in thyself dwell;
Inn anywhere; continuance maketh hell.
And seeing the snail which everywhere doth roam,
Carrying his own house still, still is at home,
Follow (for he is easy paced) this snail,
Be thine own palace, or the world's thy jail.
And in the world's sea, do not like cork sleep
Upon the water's face; nor in the deep
Sink like a lead without a line; but as
Fishes glide, leaving no print where they pass,
Nor making sound, so closely thy course go;
Let men dispute whether thou breathe or no:
Only in this be no Galenist,—to make
Court's hot ambitions wholesome, do not take
A dram of country's dullness; do not add
Correctives, but, as chemics, purge the bad;
But, Sir, I advise not you, I rather do
Say o'er those lessons which I learn'd of you,
Whom, free from Germany schisms, and lightness
Of France, and fair Italy's faithlessness,
Having from these sucked all they had of worth,
And brought home that faith which you carried forth,
I thoroughly love; but if myself I've won
To know my rules, I have and you have
                                                          DONNE.

Warm and Sunny Southwest Postage Set

I curated this postage set for a Papergarten couple who are getting married later this year. The warmth of these colors was a bright ray of hope in an otherwise gray January. I took a chance by suggesting the Ernest Hemingway stamp in this combination, but I couldn’t resist given that brilliant sunset in the background. Luckily the groom is a fan and it got to stay!

In this set…

- 6c Fouquieria from Botanical Congress series

- 18c Stargazer Lily

- 25c Ernest Hemingway

- 15c Learning Never Ends

- 15c Medallion Rose

A Sunny, Floral Postage Set

I curated this postage set for a Hill and Co. Creative Couple getting married in Charleston, SC this spring. I was able to incorporate both floral elements and nods to the wedding location and everything fit together seamlessly. This set was so bright and fun, it cheered me up just to look at it. Talk about shaking off the winter blues!

In this set…

- 15c Medallion Rose

- 20c Orchid

- 20c South Carolina (from state birds and flowers sheet)

- 20c Love

- 4c Fort Sumter

Book Related Postage

I am and always have been a big reader, and believe there’s nothing better than being sucked into a wonderful story. I just had a friend ask me about stamps related to books, and it got me thinking, how many are there? Apart from the well known literary arts series (started in 1979, each with a portrait of a famous author), which stamps actually picture books, reading or libraries?

So I gathered them all for you. The oldest one in the image above is the 1952 Gutenberg Bible stamp, which honors the 500th anniversary of the first ever printed book. The youngest is the 33c Library of Congress stamp from 2000, celebrating 200 years of this important institution founded by President John Adams in 1800. Look again at the grouping of stamps and you’ll notice it’s actually one of two Library of Congress stamps, the first printed in 1982. It shows the exterior of the Thomas Jefferson building, completed in 1897 which made it, at the time, the costliest and largest library in the world.

I have also been thinking recently about Childrens Literature found on stamps. You may remember the recent Snowy Day postage stamps, which honor the 1962 Ezra Jack Keats work, but did you know there are plenty of other examples? The block of four 29c Children’s Literature stamps are on the refined side. I even used one of these 1993 stamps, the Huckleberry Finn, for my sister in law’s baby shower invitations. The block of stamps below it, from 2006, captures the likeness of 8 famous animals from children’s literature. Since I read Curious George to my children at breakfast daily, I’m partial to that cute little monkey.

One last word…

I’m sure you’ve heard about the upcoming Forever Stamp showcasing the classic Shel Silverstein book The Giving Tree. I immediately found these to be a fun, quaint little stamp that I probably wouldn’t buy. However, commenters on my instagram shared some passionate feelings about it. This article gets to the heart of the matter. Did you know there was so much controversy about this book?

Hope you enjoyed this tour-de-book-postage! If I missed anything that you particularly love, let me know.

Louisiana Wedding Postage

I was recently contacted by Jill Elaine Designs in regards to a client with an upcoming Louisiana wedding. She wanted all the Louisiana goodness and luckily that is a state that USPS has been kind to! You can’t say that about every state’s postage… Anyway, We decided on two boats, a streetcar and the 20c Louisiana from the State Birds and Flowers sheet (a pelican has never looked so good!). Full list below.

If you’re interested in custom wedding postage, please email me gracie@enfieldpost.com

Beautiful Blues Wedding Postage Set

When a bride wants to incorporate elegance + blues, I can deliver! That is very much my personal vibe, so I channel my innermost self into these sets. I always love incorporating the 5c Audubon when I can, so I jumped on that, combining it with a perfect grouping that also honored meaningful places to the couple. The hardest stamp to get my hands on was the 32c Empire State Building. You can read more about the series it comes from here.

I curated these for a wedding invitation designed by Ink & Press Co.

🤍 5c Audubon

🤍 29c Grace Kelly

🤍 20c Preserving Wetlands

Celebrate the Century Series

In the late 1990s, USPS started issuing sheets of stamps, one from each decade of the 20TH century, with stamps dedicated to various cultural and historical moments.

I love these sheets of stamps because they are collectors items but also they are fascinating stamps with great color. The back of each stamp tells you all about the thing it pictures. GREAT series… highly recommend getting your hands on a set if you can!

Wedding FAQ Updated

Interested in custom postage sets for your wedding or party invitations? Here’s what you need to know.

In order to create a proposal for you, I need answers to the following questions sent to gracie@enfieldpost.com. Once I have your answers, I will send you a PDF proposal that is completely free to you. I will only charge you for the stamps, not for the curation.

1. How many invitations are you sending? Minimum quantity 25

2. How much postage do you need per envelope? Take your assembled invite to a postal clerk if you’re unsure.

3. What colors/themes/locations would you like represented?

Now here's some info for you.

1. I won't have everything in stock, It will take about a week from the time of receiving payment for me to gather everything then send out the stamps to you.

2. Currently, my 2oz (78c of postage) sets are starting at $2.50-$3.00. Prices go up from there

3. It is best for me to communicate with you AND your stationer if possible so that we can be clear on the technicalities (postage needs, envelope size, who is applying them, etc)

4. If you are adhering your own stamps, you need to do it with a glue stick, and also it can be very time consuming.

Wedding Postage Set in Muted Tones

A bride inquired about a 2oz postage set in muted tones for her wedding invitations. I emailed her images of a few options and she chose these. The Classic & refined designs on these stamps look so beautiful together. Figuring out the math of adding up the face value of the stamps can be tricky, but the postage on these stamps adds up to 78¢ (the current 2oz rate) perfectly! I’m so excited for her guests to receive these.

New Years Day Wedding Postage Set

Some brides choose their stamps based on a color palette, others on a particular mood, and then there are those who want to get really specific - and I love that challenge! This bride is getting married on New Year’s Day in Canada 🇨🇦 near where the Olympics were once hosted.
✨The dove (peace bridge) symbolizes unity between our two countries via an actual bridge near Buffalo NY. See this stamp here.
✨The moose is from the CAPEX series, which shows 8 animals found in Canada and the US. See the series here.
✨love that little New Years baby, a nod to the wedding date. See this stamp here.
✨the 1996 Olympic stamp represents the nearby Olympic location, and has a bonus effect of being really pretty and a substantial amount of postage! See this stamp here.
